A chieftain of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Aisha Yesufu, has revealed that she voted for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2015 presidential election because of the party’s choice of Yemi Osinbajo as its vice-presidential candidate.
Yesufu made the disclosure during a recent interview on the Kaa Truth Podcast, while explaining her decision to support the APC ticket in the election.
She stressed that her decision was not based on former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was the party’s presidential candidate at the time, but on her belief that Osinbajo would play a significant role in the administration.
“I don’t regret voting for Buhari. This is the thing, if I’m to regret voting for Buhari, it will be like this disaster we have now, we should allow it because the next person will be worse,” she said.
Yesufu explained that she believed Buhari had a history of delegating responsibilities, citing the role played by Tunde Idiagbon during Buhari’s military administration.
“It was Jonathan that made Buhari to be acceptable by the people. We had someone who had done so badly and by 2015, we voted for APC. I didn’t vote for that ticket for Buhari but because of Pastor Yemi Osinbajo,” she said.
According to her, reports that Osinbajo would oversee key aspects of the economy under the APC administration influenced her decision.
“If you ask me why, I will say because Buhari is known to delegate his duties. When he was a military head of state, it was Tunde Idiagbon that was in charge. They said Osinbajo was going to be in charge of the economy,” Yesufu added.
Yesufu’s comments come amid renewed discussions about political choices made during the 2015 presidential election and their implications for Nigeria’s subsequent political and economic trajectory.
