The Oyo State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to demolishing illegal structures around schools across the state, insisting that there will be no reversal of its stance.

This declaration was made by the Chairperson of the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority, Justice Aderonke Aderemi (retd.), during an inspection tour of the Jemibewon Area of Sabo in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Speaking after the visit, Aderemi emphasized the government’s determination to uphold environmental sanitation and ensure a lawful and orderly society, undeterred by opposition or complaints arising from the demolition exercises.

‘There is no going back on the resolve to demolish illegal structures around schools in the state.

‘Recall that His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Seyi Makinde, ordered the removal of shanties around school areas and fences on 24 October 2023, and this must be upheld by the rule of law,’ Justice Aderemi stated.

Her remarks were contained in a statement issued on Sunday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, and made available to newsmen in Ibadan.

Justice Aderemi noted that the visit followed a petition received by OYRLEA on 17 February 2025, which drew attention to illegal structures around St. Gabriel School, Mokola, in the Jemibewon axis.

‘Letters have gone out twice to the occupants and owners of these illegal structures. Our officers have even met with the ‘Serikin Sabo’ to hold discussions with the residents, and an ultimatum to vacate the place was issued as well,’ she added.

However, in response to appeals from affected parties, the government has agreed to delay intervention and demolition until Wednesday, 19 March 2025.
