The National Youth Service Corps has withdrawn corps members serving in Mbaa, a volatile community in the Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State, due to escalating security threats.
This was disclosed in a statement on Thursday by the Assistant Director of Information and Public Relations of the NYSC in the state, Yahuza Adamu.
Adamu explained that the decision was necessitated by incessant attacks on the community, reportedly perpetrated by suspected armed herders.
The violence has turned parts of Kwande LGA into an epicentre of the crisis, with over 20 people killed in recent days.
Among the victims were 16 farmers, whose bodies were dumped in River Katsina-Ala.
Reassuring parents and guardians, Adamu emphasised that the NYSC Benue State remains vigilant and committed to the safety and welfare of all corps members, working closely with security agencies to ensure their protection.
The NYSC said, ‘Since the onset of the attacks in Mbaa, which shares a boundary with Cameroon, NYSC has withdrawn all corps members from the area and has not posted any there since then.
‘The State Coordinator directed the NYSC Kwande Local Government Inspector to conduct a headcount, which confirmed that all corps members in the LGA are safe and accounted for’.
Adamu further clarified that Jato Acka Turan, where corps members are currently stationed, is far from the affected areas and not exposed to any security threats.
He reaffirmed NYSC’s commitment to proactive measures that mitigate risks and ensure the continuous safety of corps members.
The statement urged parents and guardians to rely on official NYSC channels for accurate updates regarding corps members’ safety.
