Nollywood actor and producer Jide Awobona has criticised colleagues in the film industry who use social media platforms to mock fellow actors, spread unverified claims and damage reputations.

The Ikunle movie producer expressed concern over what he described as a growing trend of public ridicule and malicious gossip among some practitioners, saying such actions undermine the values of the creative community.

Awobona said it was disappointing that some actors who understand the pressures and emotional demands of the profession would choose to attack their colleagues publicly rather than offer support.

“I’m always amazed when people who call themselves actors jump into comment sections to shade or mock other actors,” he said.

The actor also condemned the spread of rumours without evidence, accusing some individuals of deliberately sharing false stories with blogs in an attempt to tarnish the image of their colleagues.

“Some gossip and even fabricate stories when they don’t have the facts, all in an attempt to tarnish someone’s image out of envy or spite. Some even go so far as to send these stories to blogs, hoping to damage another person’s reputation,” he added.

Awobona urged creatives to recognise the sacrifices, emotional commitment and mental health challenges associated with working in the entertainment industry.

He called for a culture of respect, empathy and solidarity among actors, saying those who constantly pull down their colleagues fail to reflect the values expected of creative professionals.

“As creatives, we should understand the work, sacrifice, emotions and mental health this profession demands. If your contribution is constantly tearing down your colleagues, then you’re not acting like a creative; you’re behaving like an audience member, a fan, a hater or a troll,” he said.
