The management of Kaduna State University (KASU) has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU chapter, to suspend its two-week warning strike, saying ongoing intervention by the Kaduna State Government offers a fresh opportunity to resolve the lecturers’ grievances.
The appeal came on Friday, less than 24 hours after the lecturers began the warning strike over the non-implementation of agreements reached with the Federal Government and other issues affecting their welfare.
In a statement issued by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Musa, the university urged the lecturers to reconsider the industrial action in view of steps reportedly being taken by the state government to address their concerns.
“Management urges ASUU-KASU to give the ongoing dialogue every opportunity to succeed and to reconsider the suspension of the warning strike, particularly in view of the concrete steps already being taken by the Kaduna State Government to address the issues under discussion,” Musa stated.
The university management said it was particularly concerned about the impact of the strike on students who had travelled from different parts of Kaduna State and other parts of the country to study at the institution.
It warned that disruptions to the academic calendar could negatively affect students’ education, families and future plans.
Management appealed to the union to allow the ongoing dialogue to continue, expressing hope that the issues raised by the lecturers could be resolved through engagement with the relevant authorities.
The ASUU KASU chapter commenced the warning strike after its members met to deliberate on outstanding agreements with the Federal Government and other welfare-related concerns.
