Gunmen have abducted Oreoluwa Osunuga, the son-in-law of a former Managing Director of the defunct Monitor newspapers, Ayo Akinyemi, in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Osunuga, who owns a farm settlement in the town, was reportedly kidnapped on Sunday afternoon while leaving the farm to purchase fuel and deliver poultry products.
According to sources, the gunmen intercepted him and forcibly took him away, abandoning his vehicle at the scene. His whereabouts remained unknown to his family and employees as of the time of filing this report.
The kidnappers were said to have subsequently contacted the family using Osunuga’s mobile phone and demanded N500 million for his release.
Following the incident, the Divisional Police Officer at the Ikenne Divisional Police Headquarters visited the scene with his men and recovered the victim’s 2017 Toyota Highlander.
The vehicle was taken to the police station as investigations and efforts to locate the abducted businessman continued.
The state Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, confirmed the incident when contacted at about 9:50 pm on Sunday.
Ojajuni said the police had commenced efforts to rescue the victim, adding that the authorities were already taking proactive steps towards securing his release.
He said there was ongoing progress in the operation, although he did not disclose further details about the measures being taken to avoid compromising the rescue effort.
