The Kwara State police command has arrested 46 persons in connection with cult clashes in the state.

According to the command, rival cult groups clashed at the weekend leading to the death of one person.

Police spokesperson Toun Ejire-Adeyemi said: “Suspected cultists attacked and killed one Adelodun Farouq (36), a resident of Eleran compound. He was buried according to Islamic rites without the police’s knowledge.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that one Abubakar Gobir, a member of the Ayee confraternity, was involved in the crime. Later on that evening, reports surfaced of further cult activities in Ile-Alawo compound, Center Igboro.

“Unidentified cultists allegedly assaulted Abdullahi Alao, a 35-year-old motorcycle rider. Alao was taken to an unknown location by his younger brother.

“On 14 April, another suspected cult attack was reported in Baboko, Ile Onimago, Adabata, and Eruda. Miscreants engaged in a violent confrontation using weapons such as broken bottles and stones, leading to the blockage of Baboko Road. Swift action was taken by the DPO of C Division and six patrol teams, supported by men of the community policing, were mobilised to quell the situation.

“During the operation, 46 suspects were apprehended and handed over to the command’s Anti-Cultist Unit for further investigation. Of the 46 suspects arrested, 14 have been linked to the recent cult activities in the Ilorin metropolis”.
