Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has raised concerns over the alleged use of dangerous chemicals in agriculture and food production, revealing that a laboratory test conducted on his wife Dolapo’s freshly squeezed orange juice found it unfit for human consumption.
Osinbajo made the disclosure while speaking at the Open Day for Gardeners’ Seminar themed, “Leaving The Earth Better Than We Found It,” held in Lagos on August 28.
A video of the event was later shared on his YouTube channel and circulated widely on social media.
According to the former Vice President, his wife had stopped taking carbonated drinks years ago and opted instead for freshly squeezed orange juice every day.
However, he said she began experiencing unexplained headaches despite maintaining what she considered a healthier habit.
“She would look at my own Coke drinking habits with a lot of disapproval… But then, after a while, she started having some strange headaches, drinking her fresh juice every day,” Osinbajo said.
He explained that his wife examined other aspects of her diet and lifestyle in an attempt to identify the cause before sending a batch of the orange juice for laboratory analysis.
“The results came back. It showed that the orange juice, freshly squeezed, was not fit for human consumption. This is freshly squeezed orange juice. Not fit for human consumption,” he said.
Osinbajo subsequently called for stronger regulation and enforcement to address the use of potentially harmful chemicals in food production.
He also advocated increased public education for farmers and traders on safer alternatives, while urging consumers to ask questions, inspect agricultural produce and report suspicious practices.
The former Vice President stressed the need for greater awareness and stronger measures to protect public health from potentially hazardous agricultural practices.
