Lagos State Government on Friday announced a total ban on street trading, hawking, building of illegal structures on drainage setbacks, and the display of wares on walkways across the state.

In a statement on his X handle on Friday, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Barrister Tokunbo Wahab said that the state Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) has been directed to strictly enforce compliance with the environmental sanitation laws.

A day earlier, the commissioner had ordered the immediate closure of Ladipo Market, Mushin over several environmental offences, including reckless waste disposal, unhygienic premises, and non-payment of waste bills, among others

The commissioner explained that the latest offensive was meant to curb the activities of hawkers who disguise themselves to rob motorists and also disrupt the free flow of traffic on highways and streets.

He said that the move is also part of the renewed effort to ensure a cleaner, safer, and healthy environment.

Wahab stated that he has directed LAGESC (popularly known as KAI – Kick Against Indiscipline) to strictly enforce compliance to the environmental sanitation laws.
