Mali and South Africa completed the list of quarterfinalists of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, as they sent home Burkina Faso and one of the competition’s favourites, Morocco.
Mali won 2-1 in the first match of Tuesday, and sent Burkina Faso back home, while South Africa required only a goal to shock Morocco, who only in December 2022 made history as the first African side to reach the last four of the FIFA World Cup.
Mali’s goals came from Edmund Tapsoba’s own goal just three minutes into the game, while Lassine Sinayoko doubled the lead in the 47th minute.
Burkina Faso came back into the game when Bertrand Traoré reduced the tally for Burkinabe from the spot in the 57th minute.
In the other match, South Africa’s 23-year-old forward, Evidence Makgopa scored the first goal of the match in the 57th minute.
Achraf Hakimi failed to draw the Atlas Lions level when his penalty kick his the South African crossbar.
Teboho Mokoena then gave South Africa the assurance goal in the fifth minute of added time.
