Messi begins action in Qatar 2022; France open title defence

Lionel Messi leads twice champions Argentina into their first match of Qatar 2022 as they line up against Saudi Arabia at the Iconic Stadium in at Lusail.

It’s been 36 years nine editions ago Diego Maradona lifted the cup after beating West Germany at Mexico City.

Since then, the Messi era got closest at Brazil 2014 reaching the final but losing by a lone goal to Germany.

How far will Argentina go this time in Qatar?

In the same Group C with Argentina are Mexico and Poland who will file out later in the day.

In Group D, Africa will have another qualifiers, Tunisia stepping out after champions Senegal disappointed by losing 0-2 to the Netherlands. The Carthage Lions face Denmark, while defending champions France await Australia  later in the day.

Today fixtures:

Group C: Argentina v Saudi Arabia (11 am WAT), Mexico v Poland (5 pm)

Group D: Denmark v Tunisia (2 pm), France v Australia (8 pm)
