A 28-year-old believed to be a Kuje Correctional Centre escapee, Yakubu AbdulMumuni has been arrested by the Ogun State Police Command at Sango-Ota, in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state.

Last Tuesday, insurgents attacked the correctional service facility in the Federal Capital Territory  (FCT).

Over 900 inmates, including several Boko Haram suspects, escaped from the prison.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi said AbdulMumuni, who was said to have been convicted for conspiracy and culpable homicide in Kogi State and sent to Kuje prison, was arrested on Monday by operatives of the state police command.

Oyeyemi said “the escapee, 28-year-old Yakubu AbdulMumuni, was arrested following information received by policemen at Sango Ota divisional headquarters that he was sighted somewhere around the area.

“Upon the information, the DPO Sango-Ota Division, SP Saleh Dahiru quickly moblised his men and moved to the area where the convict was apprehended. He confessed to the Police that he escaped from Kuje Correctional Centre on 5 July, 2022, when the centre was attacked by bandits.

“He stated further that he was convicted by Kogi State High Court for the offence of conspiracy and culpable homicide and sent to the Kuje Correctional Centre”.

The Police command’s spokesperson, however, said the state’s Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole has ordered the Criminal Investigation Department in the state to facilitate the transfer of the convict to the Kuje Correctional Centre with immediate effect.

The Police had recaptured some of the inmates, including one at Suleja, Niger State, and another in Nasarawa State.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency also arrested one of the terror suspects and escapee from Kuje Correctional Centre, Suleiman Sidi.

Spokesman of the Agency Femi Babafemi said the fleeing terror suspect was arrested in the early hours of Saturday at Area 1 Motor Park, in the FCT. He said Sidi was about boarding a vehicle to Maiduguri, Borno State, when he was apprehended.

Kazeem Murtala, who equally escaped from the Kuje Correctional Centre, was captured in Suleja. Police spokesman Wasiu Abiodun said the 54-year-old man was arrested in a compound in the Bakasi area of Suleja based on credible intelligence.
