Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested two elderly men in Abia State for allegedly supplying illicit drugs to teenage secondary school students in Umuahia.

According to the agency, the suspects, 84-year-old Godfrey Orji and 75-year-old Godwin Obulunbiya Obiora, were apprehended in separate operations following intelligence reports linking them to the sale of prohibited substances to minors.

In a statement yesterday, NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi, said Obiora was arrested on Friday, 19 June 2026, at his patent medicine store on Club Road, Umuahia, where operatives recovered 4.64 kilograms of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam.

He said the arrest followed credible intelligence that the suspect was selling illicit substances to students and other residents in the area.

Babafemi further disclosed that Orji, a pensioner, was apprehended by security guards at Saint Silas Secondary School, Old Umuahia, while allegedly supplying drugs to two teenage students.

The guards handed him over to the police, who subsequently transferred him and the students to the NDLEA on Thursday, 18 June.

One of the students, a 15-year-old SS2 pupil, reportedly told investigators that Orji supplied him with the drugs, which he consumed and also resold to fellow students.

The agency said while the two elderly suspects are expected to be prosecuted, the students have been placed on counselling and rehabilitation.

In a related development, NDLEA operatives intercepted a 9.5-kilogram consignment of ADB Chminaca, a synthetic cannabinoid classified as a dangerous new psychoactive substance, at a courier company in Lagos.

The shipment, which originated from China, was concealed in a carton.

The statement also said another operation in Lagos led to the seizure of 300 grams of ‘Loud’, a high-potency strain of cannabis, hidden inside ladies’ handbags destined for Dubai.

NDLEA officers also raided the residence of a wanted drug dealer, Lukman Badmus, alias Lukman Ogombo, in the Ogombo area of Ajah, Lagos, where they recovered codeine syrup and skunk.

A follow-up raid at his wife’s shop on Lagos Island yielded additional drugs and paraphernalia, while 42 compressed blocks of skunk weighing 22.5 kilograms were found in a minibus parked outside the premises.

The agency said the suspect’s wife, Aisha Saraki, attempted to flush some of the exhibits down the toilet during the raid, but operatives prevented the destruction of evidence.

In Kogi State, a suspect, Tochukwu Onah, was arrested along the Okene-Lokoja highway with 1.03 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in custard containers.

In Ekiti State, a wanted couple, James Tony Chukwudi and James Kehinde, were arrested months after NDLEA seized 117 kilograms of skunk linked to them.

Meanwhile, in Oyo State, operatives arrested a 75-year-old woman, Tudun Olubiyi, alongside two other suspects during a raid in Oyo town, where 1,416 kilograms of skunk concealed under sawdust were recovered.

Additional operations in Edo State led to the destruction of large cannabis farms and the arrest of suspects linked to the cultivation and processing of illicit drugs.

NDLEA Chairman, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended officers involved in the operations and urged them to sustain the agency’s crackdown on drug trafficking and abuse across the country.
