Armed presidential guards seized power in Niger Republic on Wednesday, detaining President Mohamed Bazoum, and upending the constitutional political leadership in the West Africa country.
The situation has sparked condemnation from the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, ECOWAS as well as the United States.
In a statement he personally signed last Wednesday, the Nigerian leader condemned the political situation in the neighbouring country and promised that ECOWAS and the international community would do everything to defend democracy and ensure democratic governance continues to take firm root in the sub-region.
President Tinubu quickly dispatched his counterpart in the Benin Republic, Patrice Talon to Niger Republic.
In separate telephone calls Thursday evening with President Tinubu, United States Vice President Kamala Harris and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres affirmed the support of the US and UN for the position taken by ECOWAS and the Nigerian leader to restore constitutional order in Niger.
