NiMet predicts 3-day cloudiness, thunderstorms from today

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted cloudy conditions, thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of the country from Wednesday to Friday.

In its weather outlook released in Abuja, the agency said parts of the northern region would experience patches of cloud on Wednesday, with chances of morning thunderstorms and light rains over areas of Taraba and Kebbi States.

NiMet forecast isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains later in the day over parts of Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Sokoto, Katsina, Zamfara, Jigawa, Kano and Kaduna States.

For the North Central region, the agency said morning thunderstorms with light rains were expected over parts of Nasarawa, Niger, Benue States and the Federal Capital Territory, with moderate rainfall likely across most parts of the region later in the day.

In the southern region, NiMet predicted cloudy conditions with chances of morning rainfall over parts of Lagos, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom States. It added that moderate rains were expected across most parts of the region later in the day.

For Thursday, the agency forecast morning thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Jigawa, Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe and Kaduna States.

It said afternoon and evening thunderstorms with moderate rains were expected over Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Adamawa and Taraba States.

NiMet also predicted sunny skies with patches of cloud over the central region, with chances of morning thunderstorms and light rains in parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Nasarawa, Plateau, Niger and Benue States. Moderate rainfall was expected across the region later in the day.

In the southern states, the agency forecast light morning rains over parts of Ondo, Ogun, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Ebonyi, Lagos, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, with continued rainfall expected later in the day.

The agency warned of a high likelihood of flooding in parts of Imo, Abia, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States during the forecast period.

For Friday, NiMet predicted partly cloudy skies over the northern region, with chances of morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over Taraba and Adamawa States.

It added that thunderstorms with moderate rains were expected later in the day across Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Jigawa, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa and Taraba States.

The central region was expected to experience sunny conditions with patches of cloud and possible morning thunderstorms over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Niger States, followed by moderate rains in most areas later in the day.

NiMet forecast cloudy conditions over the southern region, with morning rainfall likely in parts of Ondo, Ebonyi, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States, while moderate rains were expected across most parts of the region later.

The agency warned that strong winds could precede rainfall in areas affected by thunderstorms.

NiMet advised members of the public to take precautions, including securing loose objects, avoiding driving during heavy rainfall and disconnecting electrical appliances from power sources.

It also advised residents in areas prone to flash floods to activate emergency response measures and avoid staying under tall trees during storms due to the risk of falling branches.

Airline operators were urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support safe flight planning, while the public was advised to stay updated through the agency’s weather forecasts.
