The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Professor Abdulgafar Siyan Oyeweso, has died at the age of 64.
The news of his passing was announced on Tuesday via X (formerly Twitter) by Olalekan Badmus, Special Assistant to Governor Ademola Adeleke on Digital Media.
In his post, Badmus expressed sadness over the loss, writing, ‘Rest in power, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso. An illustrious son of Ede, Osun State, and Nigeria. What a sad loss!’
It was also reported that the professor’s younger brother, Olawale Oyeweso, confirmed his death in a statement.
According to the statement, ‘He died on Tuesday, 2nd of December, 2025, at the age of 64, after a brief illness’.
He added that, ‘His remains will be buried in his country home, Ede, by 4 pm today after solat Asri’.
Prof. Oyeweso, a renowned historian, educator and mentor, is survived by his wife, children, and extended family.
A highly respected academic, Oyeweso was a Professor of History and the serving Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
He was widely regarded as an authority on Nigerian history, politics, religion, and culture, with a distinguished career spanning several decades.
