The Ogun State Government has declared Thursday, 20 August 2026, a public holiday to mark this year’s Isese Day celebration.

The government said the declaration reflects its commitment to preserving and promoting Yoruba culture, heritage and traditional values.

Isese Day was formally recognised as a public holiday in Ogun State in 2023 following a resolution of the state House of Assembly and approval by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

In a statement, the government said the annual observance provides adherents of the Yoruba traditional religion with an opportunity to honour their ancestors, perform traditional rites and promote the values and teachings associated with their spiritual and cultural practices.

It added that the celebration strengthens community ties among practitioners while allowing members of the wider society to learn about and appreciate Yoruba cultural heritage.

The government said the recognition of Isese Day also demonstrates its appreciation of the role played by culture and traditional institutions in preserving Ogun’s identity and promoting social cohesion.

Residents were urged to celebrate peacefully and responsibly, with respect for the beliefs, rights and practices of others.

The state government wished residents a peaceful and meaningful Isese Day celebration.
