Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has described the annual Osun-Osogbo Festival as a treasured symbol of Yoruba culture, saying it reflects the enduring historical and spiritual bond between the people of Osogbo and the sacred Osun River.
In a goodwill message marking this year’s celebration, the governor congratulated the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun Oyetunji, and the sons and daughters of Osogbo both in Nigeria and abroad.
According to a statement issued on Friday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said the festival remains one of Africa’s leading traditional celebrations, preserving centuries of history, spirituality and cultural identity.
He noted that key elements of the festival, including the sacred procession led by the Arugba, the participation of the Ataoja, traditional rites performed at the Osun Sacred Grove, prayers, chants and cultural displays, continue to reflect the richness of Yoruba civilisation and traditions handed down through generations.
The governor commended traditional rulers, cultural custodians, devotees and residents of Osogbo for their commitment to sustaining the annual event and preserving its significance.
Adeleke said the festival had become an important platform for showcasing Osun State’s cultural heritage to the international community by attracting tourists, researchers and visitors from across the world.
He expressed hope that the celebration would continue to bring peace, prosperity and progress to the state and its people.
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding Osun State’s cultural heritage, including the protection of the Osun Sacred Grove, while pledging continued support for initiatives aimed at promoting tourism, cultural diplomacy and economic development.
