The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) faction led by Dr. Kabiru Turaki has announced a former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Jonathan’s candidacy was ratified on Saturday at a special national convention held at the party’s office in Area 10, Garki district, Abuja.

Although Jonathan was not present at the venue, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by the PDP leader in the House of Representatives from Ekeremo/Sagbama federal constituency of Bayelsa State, Hon. Fred Agbedi. It was presented to him by a former Minister of Information and National Orientation, Prof. Jerry Gana, in the presence of party leaders, delegates, former ministers, state officials and other party supporters.

The Turaki-led faction had initially planned to hold its convention at the A-Class Park and Event Centre.

However, the Federal Capital Territory Administration directed owners of hotels and event centres to only deal with the leadership of political parties recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The PDP faction, backed by FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, is recognised by the electoral umpire.

On Saturday morning, police officers blocked the roads leading to A-Class Park and Event Centre, forcing a change of venue.

The development comes against the backdrop of continuing debates over the PDP’s leadership and future direction ahead of the next general election.
