The Kano State Police Command has set up a panel to investigate a violent confrontation at the Kofar-Kudu area of the Kano metropolis, following a clash between suspected supporters of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and those loyal to the 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the development to The PUNCH in a WhatsApp message on Monday.
Haruna, who did not give further details, said, ‘The CP, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has set up a panel to investigate the altercation’.
The incident reportedly occurred at the weekend as Emir Bayero and his entourage attempted to pass through the area on their way from his Mandawari residence to the Nassarawa mini palace.
The entourage was blocked by hoodlums believed to be Sanusi’s sympathisers.
An eyewitness told The PUNCH on Monday that following the incident, some palace guards were allegedly injured, the main gate was destroyed, and vehicles belonging to the police were smashed.
According to the witness, the police quickly dispersed the hoodlums with tear gas to prevent what would have been a bloody clash.
‘The timely and prompt response of the police prevented the incident from degenerating into a full-blown bloody clash’, the eyewitness said.
When contacted, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the incident.
He said the investigation was ongoing to ascertain the cause of the incident.
