The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Osun State University branch has disclosed that greed among the political class is responsible for poor funding of education in the country.
Addressing newsmen after a peaceful protest against the proliferation of Universities and neglect of the union by the federal government on Thursday inside the school campus, the branch Chairman, Dr. Olaosebikan Wende said the federal government can fund education at all levels if politicians shun greed.
He stated further the union would not relent in its struggle to liberate the country’s education from colonial neoliberal fundamentalism, adding that the dissolution of the university governing council is illegal and unacceptable.
His words, “As a Union of intellectuals, ASUU shall continue with its patriotic struggles to decolonise Nigerian public universities and emancipate them from neoliberal fundamentalism and commercialisation.
“Indeed, our governments can fund education at all levels if the political elites shun greed and corruption, plug the wastages and leakages and eschew fiscal discipline.”
ASUU also expressed dismay over the proliferation of universities by Federal and State Governments without adequately funding the existing ones, leading to a decline in the quality of education.
The Union’s leadership emphasised that the government’s lack of commitment to resolving these issues has pushed the university system to the brink of collapse.
Members of the union, led by Ibadan zonal coordinator, Professor Oyemabiji Oyegoke embark on peaceful protest across the campus to sensitise the community of its grievances bearing different placards with several inscriptions.
