The House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) has commended the Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals over its achievement in raising crude oil processing capacity to 700,000 barrels per day (bpd), describing the development as a major milestone for Nigeria’s energy sector and a reflection of the country’s industrial potential.
In a statement by its Chairman, Hon Ikenga Ugochinyere, the Committee said the refinery’s performance, which exceeded its 650,000 bpd nameplate capacity during a test conducted by its process licensors, demonstrates world-class engineering, operational efficiency, and strong strategic investment in Nigeria’s economic future.
The lawmakers noted that the feat further consolidates the refinery’s status as the world’s largest single-train petroleum refinery, while reinforcing its expanding role in boosting domestic refining capacity, reducing reliance on imported petroleum products, and strengthening national energy security.
According to the Committee, the development reflects the vision and commitment behind the project, adding that the refinery has become a key driver of economic transformation through job creation, foreign exchange savings, industrial growth, and value addition across the oil and gas value chain.
It further observed that increased refining capacity would help stabilise petroleum product supply, improve Nigeria’s competitiveness in regional and global energy markets, and enhance government revenue generation.
While congratulating the management and staff of the refinery, the Committee urged sustained adherence to high operational standards, environmental sustainability, and continued collaboration with stakeholders to ensure maximum economic benefit for the country.
