Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has said that the Red Devils are bound to finish the English Premier League season happier than Arsenal.

Ferdinand insisted it was better and more important to end a season winning a trophy than finishing second in the league.

Manchester United have won a trophy in Erik ten Hag’s first season as manager, with the Red Devils lifting the Carabao Cup.

They are also currently third, with eight games left in the EPL.

On the other hand, Arsenal have crashed out of all the cup competitions but have been locked in the EPL title battle with Manchester City.

The Gunners, who were previously eight points clear at the top of the table, are now five points above City, who have two games in hand.

Pep Guardiola’s City host Arsenal at the Etihad on Wednesday in a game that could be a title decider.

“I said, Man Utd, if they finish third and win the Carabao Cup, they would have had a better season than if Arsenal finish second now without a trophy”, he told BT Sport.

“My point was who was happiest!

“When you retire, and someone goes ‘oh what a season that was’ – they are not going to say that about finishing second.

“I don’t remember the years I finished second. I remember the years I won something, be it the Carabao Cup, the Champions League or Premier League”.
