The Lagos State Government has announced that from 1st April 2023, the existing 50 percent discount on the fares of buses owned by the state would no longer apply.

In a statement by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) on Tuesday, the government said that fares of state-owned buses would return to their original rates by Saturday, 1st April.

Early in February, Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu introduced 50 percent reduction on all state-owned transport services as a measure to cushion the effect of the bitting Naira and fuel scarcity faced by residents of the state.

LAMATA’s statement on Tuesday reads: “With effect from Saturday, 1st April, bus fare on all regulated buses — BRT, standard, and FLM — shall revert to 100 percent rate.

“Lagos State Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, had on Wednesday, 8th February 2023, approved a 50 percent slash in bus fares following the cash crunch brought about by the recent currency swap.

“Following the Supreme Court and Federal Government’s pronouncements on the use of old notes alongside the new notes and return of stability to the system, the 50 percent rebate is hereby discontinued”.
