The Senate President, Dr Ahmad Lawan has tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to abide by the Constitution and the Electoral Act 2022 in the conduct of the March 11 governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.

He made the call at the close of Thursday’s plenary while also suspending plenary till March 14 to enable senators to participate in the campaigns and elections.

Lawan urged the electoral umpire to consider all issues raised by the public about last Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections and make necessary adjustments.

He said, “INEC should consider looking into issues raised by the public. INEC should be strictly guided by the Constitution and the Electoral Act and their guidelines and regulations.

“Nigerians should support INEC in whatever way they can so that it conducts the governorship and states assembly elections successfully. This is because that is what we all expect and that is what we need as a democracy.

“We will be out of this place for the next two weeks and come back and continue our legislative functions”.

The Senate President thanked his colleagues “for doing everything possible to make this ninth Senate a success”.

Lawan further noted that seven serving senators were contesting in the governorship election, saying, “We wish all of them success and Nigeria will be making history, this Senate will be making history.

“Senator Binani will make history as the first elected Nigerian female governor. We wish all our colleagues contesting well and those of us who are not running should all go and participate in the processes because we will be able to observe some of the issues that may arise first-hand”, he said.
