Students of Ekiti State University (EKSU) have raised concerns over a surge in armed robbery attacks targeting hostels, particularly around the Phase 2 area of the campus.
In a statement on Monday, the Students’ Union, led by its president, Osunyomi Hezekalh, condemned the incidents, describing them as a threat to students’ safety and academic activities.
‘The Student Union strongly condemns the incessant robbery attacks on students’ hostels at Phase 2.
‘We are deeply concerned and saddened by these repeated security breaches that have continued to threaten the safety, peace of mind, and academic performance of our students. No student deserves to live in fear of robbery while pursuing their education’, the statement partly read.
The union said it had engaged the university management, security agencies and other relevant authorities to address the situation.
‘We assure all affected students and the entire student body that the Student Union is actively working on this matter. We have already engaged the university management, security agencies, and relevant authorities to strengthen security presence around school area, improve lighting and surveillance, enhance patrol and response systems, and identify and address the root causes of these incidents’.
It added that efforts were ongoing to ensure lasting solutions.
‘We are committed to ensuring that concrete and sustainable measures are put in place to bring these attacks to an immediate end. Your safety remains our top priority’.
The union also urged students to take precautionary measures.
‘We urge all students to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activities promptly to the Student Union or security personnel, and avoid moving alone at night until normalcy is fully restored’.
Prior to the statement, the union had issued a security advisory warning students about overnight robberies and injuries recorded in recent days.
‘Stay safe and vigilant… Avoid walking alone after dark, keep your residences securely locked, and stay alert to your surroundings. No phone or laptop is worth your life—if confronted, please prioritise your safety above all else’, the advisory noted.
Students also took to social media to express fears over the attacks, alleging that armed men had been breaking into hostels at night and dispossessing occupants of valuables.
One user wrote, ‘Hello!!!! Armed men are attacking hostels in the midnight in EKSU… It has been going on for days now and we are writing exams’.
Another student alleged that multiple hostels were affected in coordinated attacks, with victims forced to surrender their devices and passwords.
The development has heightened anxiety within the university community, with students calling on the state government and security agencies to take urgent action to restore safety.
