Sunshine Stars displace Doma United in Super 6 as NPFL group phase ends

On the last Matchday of the regular season, Sunshine Stars sneaked into the top 3 in Group to book a spot in the title-decising Super 6, which runs from from 3rd to 11 June with 15 matches at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena (formerly Onikan Stadium), Lagos.

Fourth on the log going into Matchday 18, the Akure Gunners walloped relegated Dakkada in Akure to displaced Doma United at No 3, and throw them to fifth spot. The Lafia based team lost 0-2 to Abia Warriors in Umuahia.

Goal difference proved just enough for Sunshine Stars against Abia Warriors with both side finishing the season at 27 points. Sunshine Stars recorded plus six goal difference as against minus two for the Warriors.

Sunshine Stars join group leaders Rivers United and Lobi Stars in the trip to the Super 6. While United forced Rangers to 1-1 in Awka, Lobi Stars lost 0-2 in Jos to Wikki Tourists, where they had been banished.

Relegated from Group B are Wikki Tourists despite their victory in Jos, while Dakkada bade bye to the top flight with a 0-3 result in Akure against Sunshine Stars.

Apart from Abia Warriors and Doma United, Niger Tornadoes, Bayelsa United and Rangers remain in the NPFL next season.

In Group A, the situation remain the same as Bendel Insurance ended the season without defeat to win the section after playing 1-1 against Nasarawa United in Jos. With a goalless result in Ibadan against Shooting Stars, Enyimba retain their second spot, while Remo Stars dismantled Kwara United at Ikenne-Remo to confirm No. 3 spot and qualify for the Super 6.

Nasarawa United go down along with El-Kanemi Warriors.
