President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to former Ogun State Governor, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, on his 87th birthday, describing him as a consistent leader whose character has remained unchanged in both public and private life.
In a personal message released to mark the occasion, Tinubu said consistency was the quality he admired most in the elder statesman, recalling decades of political collaboration and friendship.
“What I admire most in Aremo is his consistency. In public and in private, he is the same man. He will call to ask about your family before discussing your schedule. He will send a handwritten note, not out of necessity but because courtesy matters. He will firmly disagree with you, then walk with you to your car, because the argument is about the work and its outcome, not about the person,” the President said.
Reflecting on their long association, Tinubu said he and Osoba entered public life through different paths but were united by a shared belief that Nigeria should be governed with competence, respect for institutions and a commitment to improving the lives of its citizens.
He recalled their years of political engagement, including election campaigns, strategy meetings and interactions with the media, describing Osoba as a leader who consistently prioritised public service.
According to the President, Osoba’s background as a journalist shaped his leadership style, noting that he encouraged younger reporters to focus on the human impact of stories and regularly reminded political colleagues to consider the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.
Tinubu also praised the former governor’s calm disposition during difficult political periods, saying his knowledge of Nigeria’s political history and lessons from the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo often provided perspective during challenging moments.
He said Osoba’s guidance reinforced the importance of remaining focused on long-term national goals despite temporary setbacks.
Concluding the tribute, Tinubu wished the former governor good health and expressed hope that he would continue to witness the realisation of the ideals they had pursued together, including improved schools, durable infrastructure and accountable governance.
The President also thanked Osoba for his counsel, friendship and commitment to principled leadership throughout their years of public service.
