The filmmaker reportedly passed away on Thursday morning, although the cause of his death had not been disclosed at the time of reporting.
News of his death was announced by the founder of the Best of Nollywood (BON) Awards, Seun Oloketuyi, in a post on Instagram.
Oloketuyi confirmed the director’s passing and said further details would be made available later.
Actor Mofe Duncan also paid tribute on Instagram, describing Atiya as one of the entertainment industry’s most brilliant creative minds. He expressed shock and sadness over the director’s death.
At the time of publication, no official statement had been issued regarding the circumstances surrounding Atiya’s death.
The announcement came shortly after reports emerged of the death of actress Tope Osoba, adding to a sombre period for Nigeria’s film industry.
