Troops conducting counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations in Kebbi State have ambushed members of the Lakurawa Terrorist Group (LTG) who were allegedly heading towards Dandi Local Government Area to carry out an attack.
The troops, deployed under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, acted on intelligence about the movement of the terrorists, according to the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt-Col Olayinka Osoba.
Osoba said the troops swiftly mobilised and established a tactical ambush at a known crossing point near Uguwan Hassan village, where they intercepted the group.
He said the troops engaged the terrorists after making contact and overwhelmed them with superior firepower and a coordinated tactical response.
According to him, the militants abandoned their mission and fled in disarray.
Items recovered during the operation included two motorcycles, mobile phones, T&T communication radios and a Nigerien identity card belonging to one of the fleeing terrorists.
The identity card was reportedly issued to an individual from the Tilbiri Region of Niger Republic.
Osoba said troops had intensified patrols across the area and were pursuing the fleeing members of the group.
“The troops are currently dominating the general area with aggressive patrols and are in active pursuit of the fleeing terrorists to ensure the continued safety and security of the local populace,” he said.
The latest operation is among recent counter-terrorism efforts by the military as security forces intensify operations against armed groups in the North-West.
