United States President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Tinubu for what he described as his decisive leadership in addressing challenges facing Nigeria, particularly violence affecting Christian communities.
Trump conveyed the commendation in a letter to President Tinubu, where he applauded the Nigerian leader’s determination to tackle the security challenges confronting the country.
According to Trump, Tinubu’s efforts demonstrated his commitment to protecting Nigerians and strengthening the country.
“It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against these terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” Trump stated.
The remarks come amid growing security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, with both countries working together in areas including counter-terrorism, intelligence sharing and security operations.
The relationship between Abuja and Washington has strengthened in recent times, particularly in response to terrorist activities affecting parts of Nigeria.
In November last year, Trump and Tinubu reportedly agreed to establish a Joint Working Group, co-headed by the National Security Advisers of both countries, to deepen cooperation in tackling security threats.
Through the working group, the two countries agreed on measures including enhanced training, intelligence sharing and coordinated operations aimed at disrupting terrorist networks.
A major highlight of the security partnership was the reported coordinated attack on ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad area on May 16, which allegedly resulted in the death of the group’s top leader, Abubakar Al-Minoki, alongside several of his lieutenants.
Last week, the US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, visited Abuja, where he held meetings with senior Nigerian government officials.
During the visit, Garcia pledged Washington’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Nigeria in the areas of security and other sectors of mutual interest.
The latest expression of support from Trump further underscores the growing collaboration between Nigeria and the United States as both countries seek to intensify efforts against terrorism and other security threats.
