US President Donald Trump has said the United States will henceforth use the term “Super Intelligence” instead of “Artificial Intelligence” in government documents.
Trump made the remark on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, while delivering his opening address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The President also reiterated his opposition to efforts to establish an international framework for regulating artificial intelligence, saying the United States would reject what he described as a “globalist scheme” to control the technology.
“The United States also totally rejects any attempt to construct a globalist scheme to control for the artificial intelligence being spoken of so much now, hereinafter officially called Super Intelligence, changing the name,” Trump said.
He argued that the word “artificial” made the technology appear less genuine despite its capabilities.
“In that the use of the word artificial makes intelligence fake. It makes it sound fake, and it is not fake. It’s actually amazing, but we have to be careful,” he said.
Trump said US government documents would adopt the new terminology and expressed hope that other countries would follow.
“From this point forward, all of United States documents, and hopefully the world’s, will be changed to use the much more accurate term: Super, as opposed to artificial. So, it’s Super Intelligence,” he said.
He later referred to the proposed abbreviation as “SI”.
Trump’s announcement came just days after he launched a poll on Truth Social asking users to choose an alternative name for artificial intelligence. His initial options were “Superior Intelligence”, “Extreme Intelligence” and “Supreme Intelligence”.
In a subsequent post, Trump said “Supreme Intelligence” was being removed from consideration, leaving “Superior Intelligence” and “Extreme Intelligence” as the final two options in his poll.
Despite that earlier poll, Trump used “Super Intelligence” during his UN address and said it would be the term used in US government documents.
The announcement was part of a broader defence of the US approach to artificial intelligence. Trump rejected international regulation of the technology while maintaining that the US should remain at the forefront of its development.
“Super Intelligence” is also an established term in discussions about hypothetical AI systems that could exceed human capabilities across a broad range of tasks, although it is not a replacement for the standard term “artificial intelligence” in general technical usage.
