The Nigeria U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, will face Mexico in a friendly game as preparation for the U-17 World Cup gets underway, according to PUNCH Sports Extra.

Nigeria are one of the 16 countries that will take part in the World Cup, which will be hosted by the Dominican Republic.

The tournament will be held from 16 October to 3 November.

The draw for the eighth edition of the tournament took place in Santo Domingo on 22 June, with a host of fascinating encounters across the four groups.

Nigeria were lodged in Group A, which had hosts the Dominican Republic alongside Ecuador and New Zealand, while holders Spain were placed in Group B with the USA, the Korean Republic, and Colombia.

Other African representatives Kenya will face Korea, the DPR, Mexico, and England in Group C, with Japan, Poland, Brazil, and Zambia completing the final group.

Mexico proposed a friendly with Nigeria at the draws in Santo Domingo, according to a source in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

“We want to get the girls in tune on time for the tournament, and the federation is looking at the possibility of having friendly games for them”, the source said.

“We saw how effective the tour of Turkey turned out, and we hope we can have something like that for the new girls. Luckily, we already have a proposal from Mexico, who made their intentions known at the draws in Santo Domingo.

“We are taking a look at it, and we hope we can arrive at something to help the girls prepare for the tournament”.

Nigeria hope to become the sixth country to lift the trophy and follow in the footsteps of former champions DPR Korea, the Korean Republic, France, Japan, and Spain.

The African giants secured a spot at the World Cup after defeating Liberia 6-1 on aggregate in the CAF final round of the qualifiers.
