The United Kingdom has advised its citizens against all travel to parts of 11 Nigerian states and warned against all but essential travel to parts of a further 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja.

The guidance is contained in the latest Nigeria travel advice issued by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), updated on 20 August 2026.

The FCDO advised against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Gombe states in the North-East, as well as Katsina and Zamfara states in the North-West.

In the South-South, the warning covers riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.

The FCDO described the affected riverine locations as areas “accessible by boat, but not by road”.

Areas under an ‘all but essential travel’ warning

The UK government advised against all but essential travel to Bauchi State in the North-East.

The warning also applies to Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi, Jigawa and Sokoto states in the North-West.

In North-Central Nigeria, the affected states are Niger, Kogi, Plateau, Taraba, Kwara and Benue.

The advisory extends to the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja.

In the South-East, the FCDO advised against all but essential travel to Abia, Anambra and Imo states.

The same warning applies to non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers states.

UK urges travellers to check advice

The FCDO cautioned that “No travel can be guaranteed safe” and urged people planning to visit Nigeria to consult its travel advice before travelling.

It also advised travellers to research their destinations and obtain appropriate travel insurance.

The British government warned that travel insurance could be invalidated if a person travelled against FCDO advice.

It further said insurance policies should cover a traveller’s full itinerary, planned activities and potential emergency expenses.

The latest advisory also contains information on IVF and fertility treatment scams, as well as overseas adoption.

The FCDO’s Nigeria travel guidance provides information on entry requirements, safety and security, regional risks, health and sources of assistance for British nationals in the country.
