England stopped Nigeria’s Super Falcons from recording a feat for Africa as the first side from the continent to win a knockout match in the 32-year history (nine editions) of FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The Three Lions triumphed over the African champions 4-2 on penalties in Brisbane, Australia on Monday.

England will await the winners of Tuesday’s fixture involving Colombia and Japan for next Monday’s quarterfinal.

Like Nigeria, Cameroon (2015 and 2019) and South Africa (2023) all crashed at the first knock phase of the competition, while Morocco await their game against France on Tuesday to know if they will join Super Falcons in the last eight of the ongoing edition.

Normal time against England ended goalless as Nigeria were saved in the 33rd minute when the VAR overruled centre referee Melissa Borjas’ penalty call after what looked like a push from Rasheedat Ajibade on Rachel Daly in the 33rd minute.

England were reduced to a Lauren James (red card in 87th minute).

The Super Falcons lost 2-3 to the Three Lionesses in the 1995 edition of the tournament.
