The leaders of the 70 communities in Ughelli South Local Government Area (LGA) of Delta State have endorsed all the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2023 general elections.

The leaders, who included the President Generals, Secretary Generals, Spokesmen, Youth and Women leaders of the communities, said their decision was hinged on the credibility and rich manifesto of the party.

According to a statement by the PDP campaign organisation, while moving the motion for the endorsement, the President General of Ewu Kingdom, Prof. Arthur Ekpokpo, said that Governor  Igeanyi Okowa administration had brought a lot of development to Ughelli South LGA. He listed the projects to include the almost completed Orere Bridge, Ekrokpe-Urhiephron-Orhuwhorun Road; ongoing cottage hospital project, Ovwor; ongoing Okwagbe-Otutuama-Esaba-Ophorigbala Road; construction of several classroom blocks; completed Ovwor-Effurun-Otor Bridge; and skills acquisition programmes, saying that the PDP deserved to be voted for again.

President General of Otughievwen community, Hon. Michael Oghenegueke, who seconded the motion before it was unanimously accepted by the leaders of the 70 communities, said that they did not want the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nigeria as it had “brought a lot of hardship to the people as the common man could no longer afford fuel, food stuff, or travel from one place to the other without spending much”.

He said that they would all vote for the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Okowa; as well as the governorship candidate of the party, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. and the deputy governorship candidate, Sir. Monday Onyeme.

The communities also pledged their support for the PDP candidate for the Delta Central district, Chief Ighoyota Amori; House of Representatives candidate for Ughelli North/Ughelli South/Udu Federal constituency, Hon. Solomon Ahwinahwi; and that for the Ughelli South constituency in the state assembly, Engr. Festus Utuama.

Earlier, the political leader of Ughelli South Local Government Area, Olorogun John Oguma, who hosted the meeting, told the leaders that there was the need to work as one family in the elections to reap the dividends of democracy after the elections.

He recalled how the Urhobo people worked as one family to vote for the Olorogun Felix Ibru to emerge as the state governor in 1992. “So, I want us to work in line of that same spirit in Ughelli South Local Government Area to deliver all candidates of the party that have built bridges, roads, schools and empowered our people through appointments and skills acquisition”, he added.

Utuama commended the 70 communities leaders for the endorsement and urged them to talk to their people on the need to vote for all candidates of the PDP.

Leaders at the event included PDP Chairman for Delta Central district, Chief Patrick Fovie; Senator Emmanuel Aguariavwodo, Chief of Staff to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Dr Ebenezer Okorodudu; Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Council, Dr Richard Kofi; PDP Chairman, Ughelli South LGA, Hon. Michael Oshetigho; and Ughelli South LGA campaign council cordinator, Hon. Paul Etaga.
