Isese festival: Oyo, Lagos, Ogun declare Wednesday work-free

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has approved Wednesday, 20 August 2025, as a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s Isese Day celebration.

In a statement on Monday in Ibadan, the state State capital, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Olanike Adeyemo noted that the governor graciously granted the work-free day to allow traditional religion worshippers and other residents of the state to mark the occasion.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, also declared Wednesday as work-free day for public servants in the state in commemoration of the annual Isese Day celebration.

According to a circular on Monday, 18 August 2025, addressed to top government functionaries across ministries, agencies, local councils, and parastatals, the Head of Service, Mr. Bode Agoro wrote:

‘It is hereby notified for general information that this year’s Isese Day Celebration will hold on Wednesday, 20 August, 2025’.

In Ogun State, the government also announced Wednesday as a public holiday to commemorate the annual Isese Day celebration.

The day is set aside to celebrate Yoruba religion and traditions.

A statement by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr. Kayode Akinmade, on Monday, said that the introduction of Isese Day as a public holiday reflected Governor Dapo Abiodun’s recognition of the vital role that Yoruba heritage and practices play in the state’s identity and cultural landscape.

Isese Day, which is observed annually and dedicated to the celebration of the cultural heritage, values and traditions of the Yoruba people, has become a recognised holiday in several Southwest states.
