Nigerian music superstar Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has set a new milestone on Spotify, becoming the African artist with the highest number of monthly listeners in the platform’s history.
The Grammy-winning singer recently surpassed the previous record of 46.58 million monthly listeners, which was held by South African star Tyla, after reaching 46.84 million listeners. Burna Boy has since extended the record, climbing to an impressive 47.3 million monthly listeners.
With his current trajectory, Burna Boy is on course to become the first African artist to reach the 50 million monthly listeners mark on Spotify, further cementing his position as one of the continent’s biggest global music exports.
The remarkable increase in streams has been driven largely by his collaboration with Colombian pop icon Shakira on the FIFA World Cup-themed track, Dai Dai. The song recently reached No. 1 on Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart, marking another historic achievement for the Nigerian singer.
The feat also makes Burna Boy the first African artist to top Spotify’s Global Top Songs chart since Wizkid achieved the milestone in 2016 through his feature on Drake’s global hit, One Dance.
