Veteran Nollywood actress Bukky Wright has said women should not feel ashamed of making financial demands in relationships or having high standards when choosing a partner.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Moraya Show, Wright criticised what she described as the hypocrisy of men who label women with financial expectations as “gold diggers”.

According to the actress, there is nothing wrong with women seeking financial security in a relationship, adding that they should not settle for less than what they desire.

“I hate it when I hear men calling women gold diggers. What do you expect her to dig before? I won’t advise any woman to dig anything less than gold,” she said.

Wright also advised men to pursue relationships they could comfortably sustain financially, rather than criticising women whose expectations exceeded their means.

“If you cannot afford a woman, don’t go for her. Go for the one you can afford,” she said.

Reflecting on her younger years, the actress said she and her peers generally avoided dating men of the same age because they believed such relationships offered limited financial stability.

“I remember when I was growing up, we would not date our age mates because what can you offer?” she said.

She added that men who entered relationships with women whose lifestyles or expectations exceeded their financial capacity were likely to encounter difficulties.

“As a man, if you are dating somebody whose level is higher than yours, then you are in trouble. That is why I said, cut your coat according to your cloth,” Wright said.
