Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has announced plans to establish additional military bases in security-prone local government areas across the state following the recent infiltration of armed bandits.
The governor said the Federal Government had agreed to strengthen the state’s security architecture by deploying more military bases to vulnerable communities.
The Kano State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Muhammad Taju Usman, disclosed this after a meeting held on September 5 involving the governor, the 44 local government chairmen, the Speaker of the state House of Assembly and other senior officials.
According to Usman, the meeting resolved to strengthen security across the state through the deployment of additional military bases, forest guards and other security personnel in areas identified as vulnerable to attacks.
He said Governor Yusuf had already met with the Minister of Defence, with both parties agreeing on the need to complement the existing security structure, which includes the Nigeria Police Force and neighbourhood watch.
The commissioner said the initiative was aimed at improving rapid response to security threats, protecting communities and safeguarding lives and property.
Beyond security, the meeting also approved several development initiatives across Kano’s 44 LGAs.
Usman disclosed that contracts worth N27.8 billion had been awarded for the establishment of Computer-Based Test (CBT) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centres in each local government area.
He said the centres would provide students preparing for JAMB and other examinations with improved access to internet facilities.
The government also resolved to provide one rural ambulance to each ward across the state to improve access to emergency and basic healthcare services.
Two drivers are expected to be employed for each ambulance, with preference given to qualified residents of the respective wards.
The state government further approved the establishment of electric vehicle charging points at strategic locations within Kano metropolis as a pilot project, with plans for expansion depending on its success.
In another move aimed at improving grassroots engagement, Governor Yusuf approved the appointment of 50 special reporters for each LGA, as well as 35 advisers for local government chairmen.
According to the commissioner, 15 of the adviser positions would be allocated to members of the former APC structure.
Usman urged relevant ministries, departments, agencies, local government councils and other stakeholders to ensure the immediate implementation of the resolutions reached at the meeting.
