2-term senator, Ayogu Eze to be buried 14 June

A two-term Senator for Enugu North, Ayogu Eze, who died on 25 April, will be buried in Umuida, Enugu-Ezike in Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State on Friday 14 June.

According to a statement on Tuesday by the Chairman of the burial committee, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, the burial will be preceded by an inter-denominational service of Songs and Night of Tribute on Friday 7 June in Abuja.

The committee said that there will be a Night of Praise in Enugu on Tuesday 11 June, while Christian wake will follow at Umuida on Thursday 13 June; and a funeral mass the next day.

Eze, a foremost journalist, died at a hospital in Abuja, aged 65. He was in the Senate between 5 June 2007 and 6 June 2015 and was Chairman of the committee on Information and Media, making him the official spokesman of the Senate. He was also a member of the Constitution Drafting and Amendment Committee that made some novel changes to Nigeria’s 1999 constitution.

After his reelection to the Senate in 2011, he was appointed chairman of the committee on works. Eze also served as a member of committees on Police Affairs, National Planning, Marine Transport and Federal Character and Inter-Government Affairs.

At the threshold of the return of politics in 1998, he became a pioneer national ex officio member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In 1999, he was appointed Enugu State Commissioner for Information and Culture, and later redeployed to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
