The African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has said his participation in presidential debates ahead of the 2027 general elections will depend on the attendance of President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku’s position was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by his official spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo.
According to Okonkwo, presidential debates should provide a platform for both the ruling party and opposition candidates to present their policies, programmes and plans to Nigerians.
He criticised the practice of organising debates involving only opposition candidates, describing it as untenable.
Okonkwo also accused the APC-led administration of using such debates to create divisions among opposition parties while avoiding direct scrutiny over its own policies and performance.
The ADC insisted that any meaningful presidential debate ahead of the 2027 election should include representatives of both the ruling party and the opposition, allowing Nigerians to assess competing ideas and hold political leaders accountable.
