Against popular projections, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is having a big fight not to lose his home state – Lagos. With results of 17 out of 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Labour Party candidate, Mr Peter Obi is leading in the former capital of Nigeria.

Although Tinubu won in 10 LGAs, Obi is leading by 448,878 votes as against 447,192 by his APC rival. Results of three LGAs – Mushin, Alimoso and Ojo – are expected to be announced this morning.

In Katsina, the home state of President Muhammadu Buhari, the APC also lost; this time to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP). PDP’s Alhaji Atiku Abubakar polled 489,045 while Tinubu finished second with 482,283 votes.

In Lagos, Tinubu won in Agege, Apapa, Badagry, Epe, Ibeju-Lekki, Ifako-Ijaiye, Ikorodu, Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, and Surulere LGAs. Obi not won the state capital, Ikeja, but added Ajeromi-Ifelodun, Amuwo-Odofin, Eti-Osa, Kosofe, Oshodi-Isolo, and Somolu LGAs as trophies.

The three remaining local government areas where results are being expected are Mushin, Ojo, and Alimosho.

The other two front-runners in the election – Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Rabiu Kwawanso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) – have yet to win any local government area in the state. While Atiku has polled 60,330 across the 17 local government areas where results have been declared so far, Kwankwaso has scored 6,870.
