The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has retained the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) at 26.5 per cent for the second consecutive meeting, following the Monetary Policy Committee’s (MPC) decisions in May and July 2026.
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso announced the decision during a media briefing after the 306th MPC meeting held in Abuja on Tuesday.
Cardoso said all 11 members of the committee were present at the meeting, where they reviewed recent domestic and global economic developments before unanimously deciding to leave the benchmark interest rate unchanged.
The decision reflects the CBN’s continued tight monetary policy stance, aimed at sustaining the moderation in inflation, stabilising the foreign exchange market, and consolidating recent macroeconomic gains.
The MPC had also retained the MPR at 26.5 per cent at its previous meeting in May.
The latest decision comes as Nigeria’s inflation rate eased to 15.91 per cent in June 2026. Despite the decline, food inflation remains elevated across the country.
