The Chinese Consul General in Lagos, Ms Yan Yuqing, has commended Grace Schools for promoting Chinese language and culture through its educational programmes.
Yuqing praised the school for strengthening cultural ties between China and Nigeria by incorporating Chinese language into its curriculum.
She said the Chinese Consulate would continue to engage in cultural programmes with Grace Schools in recognition of the institution’s commitment to promoting Chinese language, arts and culture.
“I feel excited as if I am in a Chinese school,” Yuqing said during her visit, adding that she developed an affection for Nigeria from her first visit to the country. She also commended Grace Schools for its effective teaching and use of the Chinese language.
In her remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of Grace Schools, Mrs Olatokunbo Edun, expressed delight at the consul general’s visit, describing it as an indication of the importance attached to sustaining long-term relationships.
Edun said the visit was the second by a Chinese consul general to the school and reflected the institution’s unique role in promoting Chinese language education in Nigeria.
She explained that the school had made significant investments in Chinese language education through its partnership with the Confucius Institute at the University of Lagos, adding that several teachers had received training in the teaching and use of the language.
Edun said the school’s vision was to provide quality education that would prepare students for global opportunities.
“We are producing globally acclaimed scholars to occupy their own space,” she said.
The event featured presentations on Chinese language learning, a documentary on Chinese education, Chinese singing performances and demonstrations of Chinese traditional practices.
A major highlight of the visit was a cultural performance by the Badagry Sato drum group.
The consul general also visited the school’s pioneer Chinese classroom, recognised as the first Chinese classroom established in Lagos.
