Nigeria crashed out of the continent’s elite football club competition, the CAF Champions League on Sunday in the first round.

Nigerian champions Enyimba were eliminated following a goalless outcome against Al-Ahly Benghazi of Libya in Aba in the second leg. The Libyans scaled through on a 4-3 aggregate.

For Remo Stars, playing at home in Ikenne-Remo could only enable them to produce a lone goal, which levelled aggregate result against Ghana’s Medeama SC 1-1. The resultant penalty shootouts ended 3-2 in favour of the visitors.

Enyimba were overwhelming favourites to win the first round second tie after a battling display in the first leg.

The two-time African champions were, however, let down by their profligacy in front of goal.

Finidi George’s side failed to find the one goal that would have confirmed their place in the second round.

The visitors put up a spirited defensive display to stop Enyimba from getting the much-needed goal.

Bendel Insurance however qualified for the second round of the less prestigious CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday beating Algeria’s ASO Chief 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 aggregate result.

Rivers United drew bye into the second round of the CAF Confederation Cup.
