The Federal Government has announced that the ongoing review of the National Building Code will incorporate climate-smart construction standards, energy efficiency requirements and disaster-risk reduction measures as part of efforts to promote safer, more resilient and environmentally sustainable buildings across Nigeria.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, disclosed this on Thursday during the National Kick-off Workshop for the Development of the National Decarbonisation and Resilience Roadmap for Nigeria’s Buildings and Construction Sector held in Abuja.

Represented by the ministry’s Director of Urban and Regional Development, Mrs. Margaret Adejobi, the minister said the revised building code would strengthen Nigeria’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions from the built environment while improving the quality and resilience of buildings nationwide.

According to him, the updated code will include provisions for climate-resilient construction, improved energy efficiency, the use of sustainable building materials, disaster-risk reduction strategies and resilient design principles.

He said effective implementation and enforcement of the revised code would help lower emissions from the construction sector while enhancing the safety, durability and overall performance of buildings across the country.

The minister noted that the review forms part of wider reforms being undertaken by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development to align Nigeria’s housing and construction sector with global climate action and sustainable urban development objectives.

He added that the Federal Government remains committed to meeting the country’s obligations under the Paris Agreement, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the New Urban Agenda and Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

According to the minister, the revised National Building Code is expected to encourage energy-efficient buildings, promote the adoption of sustainable construction materials and strengthen infrastructure resilience while supporting Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
