The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has urged the media to do more in educating citizens on the importance of tax payment as well as the problems resulting from tax evasion.
At a one-day sensitisation workshop it organised in conjunction with AfroPolitan Media Limited at Kano NUJ centre on Thursday, the Chief Executive Officer, Afropolitan Media, Hajiya Aisha Umar Halilu underscored the importance of FIRS and urged the participants to spread the new knowledge they acquired from the workshop.
She noted that the participants are now better informed with the Nigerian tax system as currently driven by cutting-edge reforms being implemented by the Muhammad Nami leadership of the FIRS and the board of the service.
Dr Zahradeen Maigoshi of the Department of Accounting, Bayero University, presented a paper, titled, “General Overview of the Nigerian Tax Ecosystem” in which he explained different types of taxes.
Maigoshi, who said payment of taxes should not be trivialised, expressed the belief that the media can effectively inform the nation, especially the taxpaying public, about the necessity of paying taxes for effective administration and for nation Building purposes.
The workshop, tagged “Understanding the Rudiments and Importance of Taxation in Nigeria”, he noted, was intentionally designed to educate journalists on the new modules of tax.
