Nigeria’s Ruth Nyong won a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, finishing second behind India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom.
Nyong lifted a combined total of 168kg to secure a place on the podium.
Saikhom claimed the gold medal with a Commonwealth Games record total of 190kg, while Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry took bronze after lifting 167kg.
Jo-Beth Deireragea finished fourth with 161kg, Tammy Wong placed fifth on 160kg, Nikole Roberts was sixth with 154kg, Alex Mackay finished seventh after lifting 142kg, and Janet Atieno Oduor came eighth with 133kg.
Nyong’s silver takes Nigeria’s medal haul at the ongoing Games in Glasgow to seven.
Team Nigeria has so far won three gold medals and four silver medals, with more events scheduled later on Sunday as the country looks to add to its tally.
