The Kano State Government is set to inaugurate 20 newly constructed public slaughterhouses across the state, valued at N1,550,825,750.95.

Built under the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP), the slaughterhouses are located in various local government areas, including Dawakin Tofa, Kunchi, Bichi, Gezawa, Tudun Wada, Kura, Rano, Bebeji, Wudil, Doguwa, Gabasawa, Gaya, Sumaila, Takai, Kabo, Shanono, Karaye, Kiru, and Gwarzo.

The initiative was jointly funded by the Islamic Development Bank, the Lives and Livelihood Funds, and the state government.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Kano, KSADP Project Coordinator, Ibrahim Muhammad, said the projects had been completed and were ready for inauguration.

He emphasised that the facilities should be put to immediate use to prevent deterioration or theft.

‘The objective of this intervention is to guarantee the safety of meat, monitor animal diseases, and control the spread of zoonotic diseases that impact public health’, he said.

The meeting, convened by the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Abattoirs, Rabi’u Muhammad, was attended by traditional heads of butchers, agricultural department representatives from various LGAs, and other stakeholders.

Expressing gratitude to the government and funding partners, Sarkin Fawar Kano, Alhaji Isyaku Muri, described the project as a significant step forward in modern meat processing.

Similarly, Managing Director of the Kano State Agricultural and Rural Development Authority, Dr. Farouk Kurawa, urged butchers to adopt global best practices in meat processing.

The stakeholders resolved that operations must commence immediately at the new slaughterhouses while the government works on minor repairs and the replacement of vandalised facilities.
